Police Chief revealed it dropped a bit for 2020
The homicide rate for the Niagara region went up slightly for last year, when compared with previous years.
Chief Bryan MacCulloch told a recent police services board meeting there's been one to date for 2023, while in 2022, there were eight, but that changed with a manslaughter charge this year for a case from last year.
"There were 9 homicides in 2022, 6 in 2021, five in 2020, and seven in 2019," he says.
The Chief adds the manslaughter charge was against a woman in connection to a drug overdose death last year.
The case for 2023 was when a man was found severely beaten in St. Catharines in April. "Despite resuscitative efforts, the male victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Two men were arrested at the scene, a 42-year from St. Catharines, and a 45- year old of no fixed address."
The chief says both were charged with manslaughter and failing to comply with a release order.
