The Lord Mayor points to much history in the 1st capital of Upper Canada

Niagara on the Lake's Lord Mayor making it clear as to where he stands on potential amalgamation in Niagara.

Gary Zalepa says he's strongly opposed to any proposal that would see the town absorbed.

He says it was the first capital of Upper Canada, with much history, and any proposal for change must have clear, transparent process, public consultation, none of which has happened.

He adds he, nor council, were contacted, briefed or invited to discuss this, which, given major consequences for the economy, is unacceptable.

Last night, Regional Chair Bob Gale visited the council, and at times Gary Zalepa had to ask the gallery to be quiet.

Gale has stated amalgamation is one option, as he looks to find ways to save taxpayer money in the region.
