This issue brought before the Ontario legislature today, asked government to get out of way
We should know by the middle of this week as to whether Niagara Parks workers are going on strike.
President of Local 217 Mike Goforth says Wednesday is the final day for contract discussions, and if no deal, workers will be in a legal strike position on Thursday.
He says they just need help with the cost of living, as food, gas, and rent is so high. "We need to try and get a little bit more for our members, so they can try and keep up. We see all our managers on the Sunshine List, they're making good money, we have no problem with that, they deserve it, they do a decent job."
He stresses workers are paid wiith private money, so there's no need for the provincial government to be involved.
He adds this can impact holiday plans for visitors without tourism workers. "But it could outreach as far as Toronto, with FIFA coming up as well, as I know we have large events planned in Niagara Parks for FIFA, for people from Toronto to come down here and enjoy Niagara Falls and watch the games."
Niagara Parks has told us it continues to respect the fair bargaining process.
Niagara Falls NDP MPP Wayne Gates brought this to the Ontario legislature today.
He said during members' statements period the last thing the Niagara Region needs is a labour dispute right before summer caused by the Ontario government. "Niagara Parks workers help keep one of the world's great natural attractions running, they maintain the grounds, work in restaurants and retail, they guide visitors, look after buildings, trade, horticulture, public safety, and the services families rely on when they come to Niagara Falls."
He asked why the government is getting involved when Niagara Parks is privately funded.
"Niagara Parks workers, and Niagara tourism, both need a fair deal, and the government shouldn't be the reason why bargaining fails. Our peak tourism season is starting, FIFA is coming to Toronto, and we're promoting visiting Niagara Falls. The premier and the treasury board need to get out of the way."
He repeated the union has been asking for months to negotiate for a fair deal.
