It's an investment of over $20-million

The Niagara Region is getting over $20 million from the province to help prevent homelessness.

The announcement was made in Niagara Falls earlier today by Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff, who was joined by Niagara Falls MPP Wayne Gates, Mayor Jim Diodati and Niagara Regional Chair Jim Bradley

"Our government is working hard to ensure every person in Ontario has access to safe and affordable housing," said Sam Oosterhoff, MPP for Niagara West.

"This significant increase almost doubling provincial funding for supportive housing in Niagara is part of our plan to address the housing crisis across the province.  Today's announcement builds on our efforts through Bill 23 and Bill 97 to build more homes and make life more affordable for Ontario families."

The money will be used to help organizations delivering supportive housing.

The Niagara Region is getting $20,771,400, which is an 86 percent increase.

It will also be used towards assistance for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

Oosterhoff says the announcement is part of the province's plan to address the housing crisis.

The funds are part of an annual investment of over $200 million in Ontario's Homelessness Prevention Program and Indigenous Supporting Housing Program.
