Olivia Chow won the mayoral byelection in Toronto yesterday.
TORONTO - Olivia Chow will become the first person of colour to serve as Mayor of Toronto.
She captured 37 percent of the vote in yesterday's mayoral byelection, running against 101 other candidates.
Before launching her mayoral bid, Chow served as a Toronto City Councillor from 1992 to 2005 and as an NDP Member of Parliament for the Trinity-Spadina riding from 2006 to 2014. She is also the widow of former federal NDP Leader Jack Layton.
Chow has promised to boost services and make big investments toward affordable housing in Toronto, but she will also have to tackle a nearly $1-billion shortfall in the city's budget.
She's replacing former Mayor John Tory, who resigned just three months into his third term as Mayor after admitting to having an affair with a staffer.
