The provincial government has passed Bill 7, a legislation that would allow hospital patients awaiting long term care to temporarily be sent to a nursing home without their consent.
The province quickly pushed the bill through without public consultations, in order to address Ontario's health care crisis.
Several emergency departments in Ontario have been forced to reduce service and close for hours or days at a time, due to a shortage of nurses.
Premier Doug Ford says sending patients who need "an alternate level of care" to long-term care homes will ease the burden on hospitals.
Ford also says hospitals and Ontario Health are working to determine how much a patients would need to pay if they refuse to move.
While some health care advocates have said that hospital uninsured rates could be around $1,800 per day, Ford has said that amount is "absolutely ridiculous."
