OPP says scam targets people looking for love

It may be Valentine's Day, but the OPP is sending out a warning about romance scammers.

According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, over $59 million was lost last year due to romance frauds.

In a romance scam, fraudsters prey on victims who are looking for love, and convince them to enter an online relationship.

Eventually, the scammer asks for money for travel or an emergency, and gets the victim to invest in a fraudulent cryptocurrency program.

The OPP says you shouldn't send money to anyone you have never met in person, and always protect your online accounts.

Anyone who falls victim to a fraud can call police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
