St. Catharines city council approving the change for Grantham Avenue park, where Bradley spent much time when younger
Grantham Avenue Park in St. Catharines soon to be named Grantham Jim Bradley park, in honour of the long-time local politician.
While some want more community consultation, many councillors listed the life-time of achievements of Bradley at various levels of government.
Councillor Bill Phillips recalled a time before Bradley become regional chair. "Things weren't running smoothly at the region, there was a lot of controversy going on. And since he has been elected to the region, and is chair of the region, the regional councillors are doing what they're supposed to be doing and that is run the region."
Councillor Joe Kushner quoted others who've said nobody knows this community better than Jim Bradley.
But not everyone is for the idea.
Local resident Thomas Dorricott not only feels needs more community consultation is needed, but politicians should wait till they leave office.
He also expressed another reason against the regional chair. "Part of my opposition to it is the unilateral decision to light up the Niagara regional council in the colours of the Isreali state, but then refusing to do so for Palestine, in saying that it is not in the position of the regional council to take positions of international issues, when it previously had."
Councillor Greg Miller agreed, saying more fence mending is needed with Indigenous people.
