It's blaming inflation and rising construction costs
Inflation and rising construction costs have taken their toll on the Town of Pelham.
Council has voted not to build a new library, pointing out the bill has risen to $17.3-million.
The town secured federal funding of $5.4-million, but Councillor Olsen noted it wouldn't be responsible to build anything over $8-million. "It makes sense to withdraw this and look at the renovation of what appears to be a perfectly good building, and maybe we can find some innovative ways of increasing the capacity of it."
Mayor Marvin Junkin says council had a tough decision to make. "No one likes to turn down a grant, especially of this magnitude, but it's a decision this council made for the future of the town."
