City of Port Colborne is urging the province to create an Ontario Marine Transportation Strategy.
Port Colborne is joining several other towns and cities across Ontario in recommending the province develop an Ontario Marine Transportation Strategy.
There currently isn't a marine strategy in place, meaning municipalities have to compete with major city ports like Halifax and Toronto for limited federal funding.
City officials say municipalities like Port Colborne need funding to support recreational and commercial boating traffic, attract investment and tourism and ensure safety and security.
Mayor Bill Steele notes council has been advocating for an Ontario Marine Strategy for the past two years.
In 2022, Port Colborne will see 61 cruise ships, compared to 12 last year.
