Port Colborne Development Opposed

One resident told city council there isn't a housing shortage, but affordable housing shortage

A proposed residential complex of six 6-storey apartment buildings on Barrick Road in Port Colborne is not sitting well with people living there.

Many expressed concerns of increased traffic, and losing the small town feel.

Cameron Klemm lives on Hillcrest Road, and addressed city council about a housing shortage.  "There's not a housing shortage.  There's development in behind on Hillcrest, there's a whole bunch of empty units.   There's an affordable housing shortage, there isn't a housing shortage, and there's apartment rentals everywhere in Port Colborne, if you go to all the apartment buildings."

Developer Dunsire Properties says there's a greater market for renting instead of buying.

President Shawn Keeper also spoke to maintaining privacy for people already in the area.  "Shrubs, trees, and we have shown on our landscaping plan, wood privacy fencing, that's backing onto any existing residential.  And then, along the woodlot, and the church property, is chain linked fence."

However, he acknowledged some of their current properties have not been sold or rented.
