A new grade nine math course with real-life applications will take effect this September.
The course will eliminate "streaming" and will include lessons on data and financial literacy and coding.
Previously, grade nine students were streamed into academic math courses, which are more theoretical, or applied math courses, which took a practical, hands-on approach.
However, advocates have argued the process divided students instead of providing more options to them.
The new course will take effect for all grade nine students in the fall, whether they're in an English or French language program.
It'll take a look at real-life examples of mathematical concepts such as debt, savings and personal budgeting while also examining the importance of math across different cultures.
School boards will receive $2.9 million in funding to transition into the new program.
