Niagara Falls mayor among other mayors, councillors and CAOs offering their thoughts in St. Catharines
Niagara Falls mayor making his pitch today to a provincial committee looking at reforming government in Niagara.
Jim Diodati wants to eliminate regional council, and reduce the number of politicians.
His idea is for one city, called Niagara, but adds there's another idea. "The 4-city model, where we have the Region broken down into 4 cities, and we have a good system to deal with the things we share, like transit and public health."
He added his idea for one city could take another 50 years to accomplish.
"Right now you've got 13 governments, 13 CAOs, 13 sets of rules, 13 of anything. We think going to 4 is a natural evolution of amalgamation. It was only 50 years ago that we had 28 government bodies in the Niagara region."
Regional Chair Jim Bradley spoke this morning, as well as other mayors through the day.
