Bonnie Lysyk says parts not covered by plan guiding Escarpment use
The province's auditor general is encouraging the Ontario government to increase funding for the protection of the Niagara Escarpment.
Bonnie Lysyk says a significant portion of the Escarpment is not covered under the official plan that guides the area's land use.
Lysyk also claims the province's plans for development in the area could be harmful for endangered species.
According to the auditor general, nearly all development permit applications in the area over the last five years have been approved.
As well, the Niagara Escarpment Commission - the agency tasked with implementing the plan - doesn't have enough staff, resources or programs for some of the ongoing work, Lysyk says.
Lysyk, along with Niagara's NDP MPPs, say the Ford government needs to increase funding to ensure the area is properly protected.
