The BIA's executive director says the St. Catharines sidewalk is open
A reminder from the St. Catharines downtown BIA you can still get to businesses on Queen Street, which is partially closed.
The BIA's Executive Director Kat Dodge tells us as cleanup of the burnt Standard building, and La Scala restaurant continues, the sidewalk is open.
She says businesses between St. Paul and King Streets are feeling it. "Where the fencing is up, there's reduced visibility. There's uncertainty as to whether people know they can walk there or not, so it's been a big impact for them. But, I'd also say it's been a big impact on the morale of our downtown, losing such a big piece of history."
She encourages use of the restaurant, printing shop and other businesses.
The BIA is also working to keep morale up.
She says many people stop by to reminisce about the Standard building. "The younger people remember their parents working there, and they would, as kids, be crawling around on the floor. Also people who built their careers there, to people talking about the expansion of so many wings to the building."
