Grimsby officials have heard from residents about more police, and 24-hour pedestrian crossings
People living on Lake Street in Grimsby, between Bartlett and Ontario, want action against speeding, tailgating, stunt driving and other unsafe driving.
Alex White is with the Grand Avenue Traffic Watch Team, and told town council they'd like more police, speed zones and sidewalks for kids.
He recalls a commercial truck driving through recently. "I guess servicing the area, and dropped a forklift going over a speedhump, it didn't slow down, and the forklift bounced off the back, and rolled twice before coming to a stop. You can see how close this came to someone's driveway, this occurred at 8:15 in the morning."
He adds traffic uses that residential road when the QEW is blocked.
Half the students of Grand Avenue school walk on Lake Street to school.
Director of Public Works Brandon Wartman explains why stop signs might not work. "You get a lot of non compliance, people running through stop signs. That can be a challenge, in that you have pedestrians that are coming to those stop signs, with the expectation that that vehicle is going to stop for me, and that can cause greater conflicts."
There are currently no stop signs or other measures, and only a bike lane.
