Major-General Dany Fortin is facing one count of sexual assault.
Fortin, the military officer who led vaccine distribution efforts in Canada, was charged after a warrant for his arrest was issued earlier this week.
Fortin was in Gatineau, Quebec, this morning to present himself to police.
His lawyers say the only information they have about the charge is that it relates to an alleged 1988 incident.
In May, Fortin was removed from his post at the Public Health Agency of Canada when the investigation came to light.
Fortin told reporters he'll defend himself "vigorously" and is denying any wrongdoing.
