Province hands over in excess of $2.3-million for getting homes built, as city starts on 648 units last year
City of St. Catharines has been awarded $2,355,390 for exceeding its housing target.
Provincial housing minister Paul Calandra was in St. Catharines this morning, alongside Mayor Mat Siscoe, and other provincial and municipal politicians.
The money has been handed over because St. Catharines went beyond starting the construction of the provincially assigned 80% housing target, by beginning 648 new homes last year.
The money is from the Building Faster Fund, a pool of $1.2-billion, for any municipality to use in the building and maintenance of house building infrastructure.
The Housing Minister adds it's to also help construction companies and other stakeholders who tell the government high interest rates are a problem in getting construction underway, and people who want to buy a home have the same problem.
Mayor Siscoe also pointed out some of the infrastructure, such as pipes, are over 100 years old, and need attention.
