Council considering a 0.1 percent spending increase
St. Catharines city council votes tonight on whether it'll pass its' 2023 budget.
Mayor Mat Siscoe tells us they're looking at a 0.1-percent hike in spending, while making some changes as to where money goes.
He adds that includes working harder to keep workers in the city.
"If I'm a planner and I live in St. Catharines, five years ago I needed to be in St. Catharines and work someplace near St. Catharines because I had to go into the office every day. But if (planners) only have to be in the officeone day a week, maybe it makes sence to take a job in Toronto or Oakville or Milton, when they pay $30,0000 to $40,000 more."
The mayor says the 0.1 percent increase is due to transferring the cost of transit onto the region.
