St. Catharines Getting $98,000 For Greener Transit Study

Greener transit may soon be coming to St. Catharines.

The St. Catharines Transit Commission has received $98,500 from the federal government for a study examining the benefits of converting its fleet to battery-powered electric buses.

Currently, the fleet is dependent on diesel.

Officials say electrifying the fleet is expected to improve air quality by about 95 percent and reduce noise pollution.

Going electric is also expected to save up to about $900,000 a year in diesel fuel and up to $50,000 on maintenance for each bus.
