The city has approved discussions to move to Merritton Centennial Arena
It appears the Merritton Centennial Arena could have a new tenant starting this winter.
City council has approved discussions allowing the St. Catharines Saints to move from Bill Burgoyne Arena.
Team owner, and life long area resident Pat Smith, hopes the team inspires young hockey players. "I also want to make it clear to council, and to the public, that I'm not requesting any financial assistance from the city for this proposal. The Saints will pay the same ice rates as any other user groups. I'm prepared to operate this as a viable business, sustained through sponsorships, ticket sales and community support."
The team would get advertising rights and storage space at Merritton, but not have dedicated locker rooms.
Councillor Jackie Lindal applauded Smith for pledging to keep hockey strong. "He's worked very closely with the CYO, and Junior Girls Badgers, making concessions and adjusting schedules, so that everyone gets their ice time, and the ice time that they need. That kind of flexibility and teamwork doesn't go unnoticed."
Councillor Mark Stevens recalled it was his mother who won a contest when naming the team.
