Thorold Considers Boundary Review

It's going to hire a consultant to look at a ward system, in time for the 2030 municipal election, as it considers population changes

The City of Thorold is taking action now on its electoral map or boundaries, as it forecasts substantial population growth.

Councillor Jim Handley got his colleagues to agree with hiring a consultant to look at cost and a ward system in time for the 2030 municipal election.

He pointed out Thorold is the 8th fastest growing community in Canada.  "In the demographics part of it, the day is going to come in the near future, where there will be more of a population on the west side of the canal, in the Thorold, South Allanburg, Port Robinson area, than there is in actually what they refer to as the downtown core."

City of Welland has done similar reviews of its boundaries.

He explained why it needs to be done now.  "All the logistics are already done, the paperwork is already done, and council has the report in front of them, when the new term in council starts over again in 2026, and we're not starting a process all over again.  There's a time limit, from when we need to have that passed, to enable implementing it in the 2030 election.... we can't wait until 2029."
