City council wants the rate to be at least $19/hour
If you work as a crossing guard in the City of Thorold, council is looking to get you a pay raise to at least $19 an hour.
The idea was brought up by Councillor D'Angela.
Councillor DeRose referred to what other Niagara cities are doing.
"Niagara Falls makes $19.80 per hour, they also have a full uniform... spring jacket, hats, pants, winter coat, hats, gloves, rain coats and vests. St. Catharines makes $18.90 and also gets a compliment of clothing," he says.
Councillor D'Angela says he believes Thorold crossing guards make among the lowest pay in the region.
He also told council sometimes other city employees temporarily fill in. "As far as I know, the lowest paid city employee is around $25, so having them as a crossing guard is a lot more than what a crossing guard is. What people don't realize is they don't paid a full day, they only get paid for what they work, and their time is split up into 3 shifts."
Councillor DeRose pointed out a pay raise won't cost the city much more.
