The Thorold Tunnel will be closed until midnight at the earliest. The OPP has identified the driver of a garbage truck that crashed into the tunnel yesterday morning.
The truck damaged the ceiling, causing chunks to fall onto the road below the Welland Canal.
The tunnel was deemed unsafe by the Ministry of Transportation and vehicles were evacuated.
Police say the garbage truck that caused the collapse took off, but they later found the driver.
The investigation continues and police are talking with the driver.
The highway will re-open once the MTO says it's safe.
