UPDATE: The SIU says the man has died in hospital.
He has been identified as 56-year-old Fred Penner.
An autopsy took place this morning.
The investigation continues.
The Special Investigations Unit has been called in after a shooting in St. Catharines.
It happened on New Year's Eve on Rykert Street.
Police were called to a home on reports of a man with a knife.
Once officers arrived, there was an interaction with the man and police fired several shots.
The man was hit multiple times and taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The police wacthdog is called in to investigate reports involving police when there's death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
