Friends and family gathered around candles and a picture on Rykert Street.
There was about 75 people there to remember Fred Penner who was shot and killed by police in St. Catharines on New Years Eve.
Penner's family says he struggled with mental health and hopes that in the future situations like this can be avoided through compassion and caring.
Penner confronted police on New Years Eve carrying a large bread knife. After refusing officers repeated demands to put the knife down he was shot multiple times and sent to hospital where he later died of his injuries.
