Calls for the federal government to extend program
With federal wage and rent subsidies for businesses coming to an end this weekend, a group representing small business owners is calling on Ottawa to scale back income supports for workers who don’t qualify for EI.
The Canadian Federation of Independent Business says if the subsidies are allowed to end on Saturday, it will force many businesses to reduce their hours, lay off staff or shut down.
The federation also wants Ottawa to scale back the Canada Recovery Benefit for workers.
The group says the program is contributing to the labour shortage by creating a disincentive for some part-time employees to work.
