Wainfleet Demands Justice Reform

Delegates and councillors needed tissues during presentations about sexual abuse

It was an emotional evening last night at the Township of Wainfleet as it voted unanimously to press the provincial government make the sex offender registry public.

A number of delegates gave tearful accounts of abuse they suffered as children.

Alicia Googoo says she was first assaulted at 5-years old, by her mother's live-in boyfriend, who was on the registry but they never knew.

She says he moved around targeting young mothers.  "For years I turned to addiction to cope with the pain, it took years of hard work to rehabilitate myself, my sister never escaped her trauma... it was her birthday yesterday, she was lost to the streets."

Mayor Brian Grant credited the delegates for getting Thorold, St. Catharines, Grimsby, Lincoln and region on board.  "You're out there at the courthouse, I know you're going to be out there again.  Thank you again for coming out here again and sharing your story, it's obviously moving the entire room, as you can imagine, it's very emotional for everyone sitting here today."

The delegates spoke of the 3-year old girl assaulted in Welland.
