A St. Catharines man wants the provincial government to get this done
A St. Catharines man who lost his two grandchildren to drowning this summer is working with the region to make water safety training in public schools mandatory.
Mike Williams spoke to the Niagara region moments before it voted to ask Ontario's Minister of Education to get this done.
However, he also referred to a 2015 report with recommendations meant to prevent tragedies. "There hasn't been anyone to stand up front and centre in this issue, and push this as hard or as long as it takes to get this done. I intend to be that voice, I think enough is enough."
Research shows most children who drowned never intended to be in the water.
Councillor Tom Insinna added it should also be sent to school boards. "They are the educators in our world. I know that sending a directive to the Minister, that with the stroke of a pen, he can do that. But, it doesn't mean that they will do that."
A report shows several Ontario municipalities have expressed interest in this.
