Police say suspect swam through pond to escape
A collision in Welland has led to impaired driving charges.
Police say around 7:30 a.m. this morning, a single vehicle crash took place near South Pelham Road and Foss Road.
A white Hyundai Sonata went off the roadway into an adjacent tree line.
Police spoke briefly with the driver, who then suddenly ran into a wooded area.
He then swam through a nearby pond and ran into a residential neighbourhood to get away from the officers.
Around 9:15 a.m., he was found hiding in a backyard.
32 year old Mohamud Mohamud Hassan of Welland was arrested for the following offences:
- Impaired Operation of a Conveyance - Drug
- Failure or Refusal to Comply with Demand - Drug
- Flight from Peace Officer
- Fail to Stop at the Scene of an Accident
He's been released from custody, and a court date has been set.
