Councillor Jamie Lee says a zone on Plymouth Road is a no-brainer
Community Safety Zones are being considered by the City of Welland for Plymouth Road and Gaiser Road.
Councillor Jamie Lee says his motion for Plymouth Road is a no-brainer, from the train tracks north to Lincoln Street.
Councillor Bonnie Fokkens was on board with that, pointing to schools and daycares in the area. "We do have the Plymouth Park, we have Rapelje Lodge, we have a home for life keepers, for those who have intellectual and mental disabilities... of course, we have a medical building too."
Councillor Sharmila Setaram's motion calls for similar on Gaiser Road.
However, Councillor Graham Speck was hestitent, saying the speed limit on Gaiser is already 40kms. "Why not just go in and double the fines in every area of the city, that would make more sense, or serve as a greater deterrent, rather than having some Community Safety Zones, and some not... what neighbourhood deserves more safety, and what neighbourhood deserves less safety?"
City staff will be looking into the details for both areas, report back to council, who will then decide how to proceed.
