Powdered formula products with an expiration date of April 1st, 2022, need to be returned or thrown out due to bacteria risk.
Several Abbott brand powdered infant formula products are being recalled across Canada due to a bacteria risk.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says products with an expiration date of April 1st, 2022, need to be tossed or returned due to possible Cronobacter sakazakii and salmonella bacteria contaminations.
The agency notes in rare cases, the Cronobacter sakazakii bacterium can be fatal.
It has been known to cause severe intestinal infection and blood poisoning in newborns.
Salmonella can also be deadly in rare cases, but usually causes short-term symptoms like fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea.
While there have been reported illnesses in the United States associated with use of the products, there have not been any reported illnesses in Canada.
