Damage too extensive for an investigation
We will likely never know what, or who, is responsible for the weekend fire that razed the former St. Catharines Standard building in downtown St. Catharines. Fire crews responded to a call late Friday evening and arrived to find the upper floors of the landmark building on fire. Early Saturday the roof collapsed and heavy machinery was brought in to assist in putting out the fire. Due to the heavy damage, the integrity of the building was heavily compromised and an investigation could not be carried out safely. According to St. Catharines Fire Chief Dave Upper, "with the heavy fire involvement and the collapse, it would not permit us to safely investigate the fire...and working with the Office of the Fire Marshall we made the determination that we would not risk any of the team members and we would just classify the fire as 'undetermined'"
