Organization proposing open competition category instead
World swimming's governing body has effectively banned transgender women from competing in women's events, starting today.
This comes after FINA members adopted a new "gender inclusion policy" yesterday which only permits swimmers who transitioned before age 12 to compete in women's events.
The organization is also proposing an "open competition category."
However, most countries do not allow anyone that young to transition.
The world Professional Organization for Transgender Health recommends 14 as the minimum age for starting gender transition hormone treatments.
