Plan to lift barriers for trained professionals to work in their fields
Labour Minister Monte McNaughton announcing a plan this morning to make it easier for new Canadians to get a licence so they can work in the professions they are trained in.
The proposed bill would prevent many regulatory bodies from requiring immigrants to have Canadian work experience to get licensed.
It will apply to the licensing bodies governing engineers, architects, teachers, accountants, social workers and others.
It would also help internationally trained workers in 23 trades, including electricians, plumbers and hoisting engineers.
This comes just days after Ford was put on the hot seat for a remark he made about immigrants.
During a discussion on the labour shortage Ford said people who want to come and work their "tail off" like every other new Canadian has done should come to Ontario, but those who want to "collect the dole and sit around" should go elsewhere.
The opposition quickly pounced on Ford asking him to apologize.
But the Premier would only say he is pro immigration and does not need to apologize for his remark.
