Mayor Jim Diodati honouring Councillor Wayne Thomson last night, saying he 'bled Niagara Falls', other councillors offering emotional tributes
The look of Niagara Falls city council is about to change.
During last night's meeting, Mayor Jim Diodati announced Councillor Wayne Thompson is stepping down.
Diodati honoured the former multi term mayor, saying he 'bled Niagara Falls'. "He formed that skyline that you see. Without the casino business, we wouldn't have the hotels that we have, and the convention centre that we have. He brought a lot of notoriety to the city, really interesting, really colourful, fiesty."
Councillor Mona Patel said he was so nice to her after she won her seat, offering to take her out for a coffee.
Councillor Victor Pietrangelo wished him the best. "It's been a bit of a go for him at council, a lot of us always say he knows what he wants to say. He really does. His heart has always been in the right place, he's always put Niagara Falls first, he's always fought as hard as he could for Niagara Falls."
Councillor Mike Strange recalls the former mayor handing him awards when he was a boxer.
The city has 60 days to fill the seat, but former Councillor Chris Dabrowski, who was the 1st runner up in the last election, says he's interested in the job.
