Goal is to improve students' mental health
Hamilton's public school board has asked the Ministry of Education for permission to open schools to inclass learning from June 21st to the 29th.
This comes after officials with McMaster Children's Hospital asked the city's school boards to consider allowing kids back into class in an effort to improve their mental health.
The hospital's president Bruce Squires writes, since the pandemic began, referrals to their eating disorder program are up 90 percent, suicide attempts have tripled and substance abuse disorders have doubled.
Squires adds with each day, the impact worsens and that is why the hospital is "strongly in support" of the move to in-person learning.
The public school board Chair Dawn Danko noting, "By allowing elementary students to return in person for the last week of school, we can provide safe and equitable access to in-person, end-of-year activities that support relationships and routines for our students."
