The board says it's spending more than double than in previous years
A massive spike in provincial spending to upgrade and build schools for the District School Board of Niagara.
Associate Director of Education Stacy Veld tells us they're using over $47-million to renew buildings over the summer, while in previous years it was about $20-million.
"We are completing accessibility projects, major mechanical and H-VAC upgrades, roofing and interior renovations. We've also got some major builds and additions happening."
She says this is the largest infusion of money ever, with much focus on ensuring proper air flow in buildings.
That includes putting up new schools. "Close to $50-million in additions at Fitch and Quaker Roads in Welland, we've also started construction on our new elementary school in Niagara Falls, and we will be finishing the joint school in Wainfleet."
She adds the provincial government has been very helpful in getting this work done.
