Victoria Centre BIA concerned about crime around casinos, and how to use money for police from OLG
Niagara Falls city council plans to meet with Regional police concerning crime around casinos.
Councillor Lori Lococo brought up the issue about policing and crime, as council reviewed a report on the city's use of money granted from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, of which 18% is used by police.
She noted the Victoria Centre BIA recently met, discussing ways to address some problems.
Mayor Jim Diodati agreed with her suggestion of more police patrols. "I agree with you that foot patrols are the best for street level presence, and it gives people a level of comfort, and also on the bicycles... that's another thing... and they have been doing it. But, I know it's never enough, so it seems."
The city's Chief Administrative Officer Jason Burgess added the NRP will talk to council about its ideas.
"They have very good data on where issues are, and though you may perceive there is a lack of safety in a particular area, sometimes the perception of the data doesn't match up," he says.
He said this ties in with Councillor Lococo's concerns about recent crime on Victoria Avenue and Huron Street.
