Dr. Kieran Moore says the dominant flu strain this season is a bad one, and the influenza season is expected to pick up in the next couple of weeks.
He notes this year's flu shot formula appears to be reducing hospitalizations, but it takes ten to 14 days to take effect, so Ontarians should get vaccinated against the flu now.
Moore also says this week, the influenza positivity rate is expected to rise about five percent, and the virus will spread more dramatically if there is a second week at that level.
Right now, Moore says he "strongly recommends" older people or anyone with an underlying health issue to mask up in public.
