Leaders of the Ontario NDP, Green and Liberal parties are asking auditor general Bonnie Lysyk to examine impacts of housing development plans for the Greenbelt
Ontario's opposition leaders are calling on the auditor general to investigate the financial and environmental impacts of the province's plans to develop housing in the Greenbelt area.
The leaders of the NDP, the Green Party and the Liberals have written a letter, expressing concerns about the Ford government's plans.
The province is set to build thousands of homes on about 7,400 acres of land, despite calls to protect the Greenbelt.
"The removal of protections from these lands has instantly shifted wealth to property owners, who have likely benefited substantially from the rezoning of this land from undevelopable agricultural land to developable land," the letter reads.
Several large developers have purchased Greenbelt land since the Ford government was elected in 2018.
This includes a recent investment made in September 2022.
Some advocacy groups claim developers were tipped off on the plans.
The OPP have been looking into complaints made against the province to
Premier Doug Ford and Housing Minister Steve Clark have both denied the claims.
