Police Warn of Another Scam

In this one, a caller claims to be from the Canadian Anti-fraud Centre, or local Crown Attorney, claiming identity theft

Police out with another warning of fraud in Niagara, as criminals change their schemes.

They say you may receive a call from someone claiming to be from the Crown Attorney's office, and you may see a legitimate phone number on the call display.

Police add the caller could claim to be from the Canadian Anti-fraud Centre, using the name Officer Shawn Diaz.

The caller says the person answering is a victim of identity theft, and payments need to be made using government approved ATM machines, or deposit envelopes of money into designated drop boxes.

These ATM machines are Bitcoin machines, not regulated.

Police stress the Crown Attorney's office or the Canadian Anti-fraud centre will never make these calls, or direct payment.
