First Nation, Metis and Inuit content to be expanded in elementary classrooms.
The Ontario government has announced a plan to increase Indigenous content covered in elementary schools.
Details of the plan were released today by Education Minister Stephen Lecce and Indigenous Affairs Minister Greg Rickford.
For grades 1-3, mandatory Indigenous-focused learning is being added to the Social Studies curriculum.
Lessons will focus on the residential school system, the role of families in Indigenous communities, and contemporary realities faced by First Nations, Metis and Inuit Peoples.
The changes were made in consultation with Elders, Knowledge Holders and education stakeholders.
Currently, kids in grades 8 and 10 learn about the residential school system in mandatory History classes.
This comes as the ministry is investing $23.96 million to provide education opportunities for First Nation, Metis and Inuit students.
