The Better Regional Governance Act reduces the size of Niagara regional council
A major step forward for the Ontario government in advancing government reform in Niagara, and some other regions.
It just passed the Better Regional Governance Act, meaning an appointed regional chair and 12 mayors, and no longer 32 councillors.
Grimsby resident Annette Gibbons addressed her council recently, not happy with the lack of public consultation. "Instead, creating uncertainty and concern among residents, and how and where decisions affecting Niagara are being made. This disconnect further contributes to the lack of public confidence."
She also expressed displeasure with the Strong Chair power. "Influence the flow of staff reports and information council relies on. Shave the timing and framing of decisions before council votes happen. Exercise procedural authority that can limit or structure debate."
Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff says the changes can now take effect in time for the fall municipal elections.
Welland Mayor Frank Campion says it'll improve efficiency and cost of government.
