St. Catharines man spoke to Regional council, addressing need for police, crosswalks and speed cameras
A St. Catharines resident is hoping the Niagara region moves forward on increased police enforcement on rules of the road, as well as crosswalks.
Bryan Blue spoke before regional council, noting what some regional officials have said, as well as the public... that there are some really bad drivers in Niagara.
He said a pulled over driver impacts passing motorists. "This often prompts other passing drivers to slow down, buckle their seat belts, stop using their phones, and be more mindful of road rules in general. Even if the passing by drivers were not breaking the law."
He also pushed for improved crosswalks at various locations.
He acknowledged it's his responsibility as a pedestrian to make sure vehicles know his intention, but a proper crosswalk can help.
He noted the one on Lake Street, near Montebello Park. "There is a similar crosswalk like this that has the elevated standard, that a pedestrian can access to cross with. But, if you keep going on down Lake Street, there are two other crosswalks that are similar to this, that don't have the same elevated safety standard."
Regional staff added flashing beacons could be included.
