Region's Planning Committee Approves Hoverlink

The motion calls for provincial approval, councillor says main hurdle now is getting around tariffs

Another step forward by the Niagara Region's planning committee in approving hoverlink service between Toronto's Billy Bishop Airport and Port Weller.

The motion calls for the province to approve this.

Regional councillor and Mayor Mat Siscoe points to one last hurdle... US tariffs, in that supply chains for materials need to be re-thought.  "They have lease agreements now on both sides of the lake... a lot of the most difficult part of the work has been done, this really comes down now to sourcing and supplying the materials to get the project up and running."

Councillor Michelle Seaborn says anything that gets her off the QEW to Toronto is fine by her.

Councillor Rob Foster came up with another mode of transportation to avoid the QEW.  "I've always thought there should be commuter flights going out of the Niagara District Airport, over to the other side of the lake, as well, as a premium product.  But that's up to the private sector to do that, not me."

Hoverlink Ontario proposes a travel time of roughly 30 minutes across Lake Ontario.
