It was a tie vote at city council for Quaker Road, it was noted Welland is the only Niagara region city not to have any
Residents living on Quaker Road in Welland, near St. Lawrence and Towpath, who want speed bumps to slow down traffic will not get their wish.
It was a tie vote at city council recently, meaning a loss for the idea.
In voting for the idea, Councillor Tony DiMarco says he's in that area all the time, adding someone was seriously hurt a year ago. "It's not just on Quaker Road, it's all over our city. The intersections are just loaded with vehicles, people are not watching crossing the streets, rather looking at their phones."
However, a traffic study by city staff showed the average speed of drivers was below 50kms.
Councillor Leo Van Vliet pointed out while speed humps do work, drivers speed up again after.
"I have to tell you, I'd rather have a car go by my house at 10 to 15kms over the speed limit, than have to listen to people slowing down and speeding up, because as soon as you get past that speed bump you're immediately trying to accelerate."
Councillor Bryan Green voted in favour, stressing residents asked for something to be done.
