City council is allowing an energy company to apply to the provincial government to build solar panels on a site in the city's south end
Approval has been granted by the City of Thorold for an energy company to further explore installing solar panels on an unused piece of municipal land.
Kevin Whyte is with Alectra Energy Solutions, and says they can now apply to the provincial government to build on the former Bioveld landfill area, alongside working with the Hamilton/Oshawa Port Authority as well.
He says putting solar energy on former landfill is common. "Capping of the landfill would be done through engineering firms... we would go through full environmental assessment to ensure that any solar that is sighted there is properly done. There are different ways that you can put solar there."
He says they'll still come back to the city for zoning and site planning approvals.
He also says it's a long process, that includes public consultation. "To ensure that it is compliant with all the provincial and whatever other environmental standards that are out there. There's also capping of solar landfills, and capping is not new... there's many ways you can do it."
He added the solar farm means minimal disruption to the local community and environment.
