Starting tomorrow, doses will be administered to local healthcare workers, essential caregivers and residents at long-term care homes and high risk retirement homes.
This is in accordance with the first phase of the province's COVID-19 vaccine rollout framework.
The region's first shipment of the Pfizer vaccine arrived in St. Catharines today.
President and Interim CEO of Niagara Health Lynn Guerriero says the arrival marks a turning point in the region's response to the pandemic.
"The sharp increase of COVID-19 activity in our hospital and community is serious, and these vaccines are critical to save lives and protect hospital services. Over the next three weeks, we’ll be working with NRPH&ES to vaccinate more than 11,000 people in Niagara."
In the first phase of the vaccine rollout, the region plans to also immunize other high risk groups, including First Nations adults, and adult chronic homecare recipients. This phase will end in March.
In the second phase, from April to June 2021, high risk older adults and other at risk populations will receive doses.
The general public can expect to receive doses in August 2021.
