Water Deemed Unsafe For Swimming at Bernard Avenue Beach, Nelles Beach and Nickel Beach

Officials advise staying out of the water due to safety issues, E.coli.

If you're heading to the beach, you'll want to avoid the water at Bernard Avenue, Nickel and Nelles beaches for the time being.

Niagara Region Public Health says there are safety issues at Nelles Beach, and the others are considered unsafe due to E.coli.

Throughout the summer, Niagara Region Public Health tests the water at 19 public beaches, though testing beach water for E.coli can take a day or more.

Consuming E.coli can cause serious illness such as diarrhea, vomiting and stomach cramps.

There are several other reasons why a beach may be considered unsafe for swimming, including pollution, spills, smells, garbage, weather conditions, blue-green algae and dead fish.
